Illegal debt collection practices come in many different forms. Some examples include:
Debt collectors cannot harass you by:
- Threatening you
- Using obscene or profane language
- Repeatedly calling you
Debt collectors cannot lie to you by:
- Telling you that you owe a different amount than what you actually owe
- Pretending to be an attorney or from the government
- Telling you that you will be arrested
- Claiming that they will take legal action against you if it’s not true
Debt collectors cannot treat you unfairly by:
- Trying to collet interest, fees or other charges on the amount you owe unless the original contract or law says they can
- Depositing a post-dated check early
- Publicly revealing your debts
